HOSPICE CO-FOUNDER NAMED 2008 WNY HERO
BUFFALO, NY - Time Warner Cable and the United Ways of Western New York recently announced that Patricia Evans, a Niagara Hospice volunteer and board member, has been selected as a WNY Hero. The recognition occurred at the first-ever gala All That Matters WNY Heroes Awards Ceremony, broadcast live from the Buffalo Convention Center on November 19. Winners were chosen by Western New York residents who submitted over 85,000 online votes to decide who was most worthy of the honor in each of five categories. In addition to the award, Time Warner presented Evans with a donation of $3,000 to benefit Niagara Hospice.

The WNY Heroes series of Time Warner Cable’s All That Matters program, airing weekdays on channel 13 at 3 p.m., was designed to recognize ordinary people who accomplish extraordinary deeds in categories ranging from cultivating children to medical miracles. Call for nominations for heroes went out in May and were accepted until the end of June. Finalists were selected by a blue-ribbon panel. All Heroes were profiled as a part of the WNY Heroes series on All That Matters.

Patricia Evans was nominated for work in the Community Crusader category for her role in recognizing the need to help Niagara County residents diagnosed with a terminal illness. Evans and a core group of other Hospice Heroes established Niagara Hospice in 1988 when the organization served its first homecare patient. Niagara Hospice director of volunteer services, Alice Beck said: “Even back then, Pat had a vision for a place to go for hospice care for individuals who have no caregiver system at home. That vision became a reality when Niagara Hospice House opened its doors and accepted its first patient in June 2007. Pat’s pride and overwhelming joy showed as she spoke at the opening ceremony.”

Since 1988, Niagara Hospice has served over 13,000 Niagara County residents faced with terminal illness, and their families. Beck continued to say, “Without the dream of Pat Evans, who embodies and exceeds what a Hospice volunteer is, we might still be a pebble on the ground waiting for that special someone to pick it up and see so much more.”
