COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FUNDS HOSPICE
Niagara Hospice recently installed an automated pharmacy dispensing system at Niagara Hospice House, made possible through a grant from the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo. The $40,000 grant provided for the purchase and installation of an Accudose Medication System as well as staff training for its use. The system offers convenient access to medications and comprehensive reporting tools with the touch of a few buttons.

The computerized automated dispensing system (ADS) was activated at Niagara Hospice House in February to allow medications to be stored and dispensed near the point of care. The technology behind the ADS provides clinical staff with greater access to a larger variety of medications, faster response time to patient’s pharmacological needs, and efficiencies that promote cost saving strategies.

“The ADS allows us to do more by creating efficiencies between the time a doctor orders a medication and when it is administered to the patient,” states Niagara Hospice Director of Clinical Services, Janet Ligammari, RN. The device also provides a cost savings to the agency by eliminating unused medications and reducing pharmacy delivery charges. “In the end, the time we once devoted to managing medications now goes to hands-on care, which is really what nursing is all about," says Ligammari.

The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo is a public charity holding more than 700 different charitable funds established by individuals, families, nonprofit agencies and businesses to benefit Western New York. Since 1919, the Foundation has served the needs of the community and the wishes of their donors through personalized service, financial stewardship, local expertise, and community leadership.

Niagara Hospice serves over 1,000 families each year and celebrates 21 years of caring this year - providing physical, emotional, and spiritual support services to Niagara County residents faced with end-of-life illness.
